Starting out as ordinary rural branches they played huge roles in both world wars, serving training areas for infantry and tanks in the first war and airfields and one of the largest bomb dumps in the country in WW2. In the end the author had too much diesel material and hopes to produce a further book to accommodate it.

In the end the main line went via Matlock and the line from Duffield to Wirksworth remained a branch; its main traffic being stone from the many quarries round the town. This traffic continued into the 1980s. After it ceased the track was not lifted and the line is now the home of the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway.
